How has high school writing helped me this semester?

I utilized research skills along with paraphrasing skills. When I was working on the annotated bibliography and the reading responses with annotations, it was important for me to find the most valuable information and present that to my audience instead of including irrelevant and unnecessary quotes and details.

How has high school writing negatively impacted this semester?

My AP English classes in high school focused on conventions and the was little room for free writing and adjusting syntax. I never considered myself a strong writer because I hated to stick to the conventions and always struggled with creating standard content.

What conversations should we be having as parents, siblings, grandparents, childcare providers, and friends among ourselves and with the children in our care about the internet and how to use it?

Growing up with access to the internet at a very young age, I encountered my fair share of “disturbing” content. Internet trolls are never going to stop lurking on the internet and I think it is necessary to explain to children growing up online the importance of understanding the motives for the trolling. Children should learn the difference of real content versus the content that is conjured up to instill fear and create a commotion on different platforms. There are predators on the internet and the best way for parents to protect their children from these predators is to address the potential problems and train their kids how to react and who to alert in certain situations.

Someone or something or some combination of people and things is using YouTube to systematically frighten, traumatise, and abuse children, automatically and at scale, and it forces me to question my own beliefs about the internet, at every level.”

Comic Conventions: A Visual Narrative of Health Information

Lippincott was one of the first representatives in popular culture of a character living with this disease. Later representations include The O+ Men, and general health education comics. Through research comparing the effectiveness of standard information booklets and health education comics, many heath providers agree that comics play an important role connecting with a wide range of patients, contributing to a sense of closure and acceptance for their condition, and can assist with important decision making regarding the next steps to take, especially for patients who are underrepresented and less educated about their condition.

Lippincott’s memorization in the AIDS Quilt proves that his appearance in the comic strip, Doonesbury, had a progressive impact on multiple communities. Lippinocott was a white homosexual man, yet his presence was able to connected to an extensive audience. While many subgroups did not have a voice during the peak of the AIDS epidemic, fictional characters and their creators took upon themselves the role of representing all marginalized communities and attempted to lift them out of the disease that they struggle with.

First I will discuss Andy Lippincott’s Aids Quilt panel and describe important aspects displayed on it. Then I will present statistics from the Center of Disease Control to address the misrepresentations of certain communities regarding AIDS epidemic outreach efforts and discuss how the CDC utilizes health comics to provide necessary information to those communities. After this issue is addressed, I will explain the universal positive impact that health comics have. Lastly, I will discuss present day AIDS health education efforts that will conclude health information via comic strips have made a difference in the lives of many people surrounded by AIDS.

Who is Andy Lippincott?


Peeking out as just a sliver from all four corners of the panel is a black fabric background. There is a rather large fluffy light pink thought cloud that takes up the majority of the space provided on the panel. The name “Andy Lippincott” appears in the center of the thought cloud in capitalized black block letters. Above the name in an italicized black font is “in loving memory…” and below the name, the same font reads “community leader, conservationist, author, Olympic medalist, and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize!” To the farthest right side of the thought cloud is an image of a cartoon man from above the knee up. He has black hair and a white complexion. He is wearing a white button up shirt with a tan colored cardigan over it and has black slacks on as well. His nose is a very prominent feature and he has both hands tucked away in his pockets. He seems to be a bit slouched over but maintains a small yet friendly grin. This is Andy Lippincott. Right below Lippincott are the dates of his life, 1945-1990, in the same bold black font as his name.


The second panel found underneath the first one has a sky blue background and has a series of cut-out comic strips pasted on white fabric. There are 20 of these white fabrics that border around a black rectangular center that restates “Andy Lippincott”. His birth year and death year are centered underneath his name along with the same quote “In loving memory of Andy Lippincott, community leader, conservationist, author, Olympic medalist, and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize” placed under the years.

These two different panels are sewn on to a lavender cloth. This block differs from other blocks that make up the AIDS Memorial Quilt because other blocks contain eight panels yet this one only contains two horizontal panels which are spread out on a block. Both these panels were created by G. Scott Austen, Marceo Miranda and Juan-Carlos Castano. This block was given to the Names Foundation but the author wanted it to remain separate from the AIDS quilt since Andy was a fictional character that symbolized a life infected with AIDS in gay community.

Andy Lippincott is one of the first gay public characters in the media along with being one of the only fictional characters feature on an AIDS Memorial Quilt. He made is first appearance January 1976 in the Doonesbury comic strip and came out as a gay character. He then reappeared in 1982 and in 1989 he was diagnosed with AIDS. Throughout the years he struggled with the disease and eventually died from the it. Garry Trudeau is an American cartoonist and the creator of the Doonesbury comic strips. Trudeau became the first comic strip artist ever to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1975. (Krier)

Trudeau sheds light on taboo subjects by utilizing his humor, artistic abilities, and his voice as a person growing up in his generation. Trudeau used his satiric comics to mock government and health officials who stereotyped homosexuals. By stating that Lippincott was an Olympic medalist, Noble Peace Price winner, etc., Trudeau was trying to diminish the perception that homosexuals were inadequate in society. The significance of including Andy’s character in this comic strip was to help bring the AIDS/HIV crisis into popular culture and spread awareness to all communities.

Several of the 900 newspapers that contained the Doonesbury comic strip refused to publish strips regarding Andy’s character due to controversy surrounding Lippincott’s character and AIDS/HIV. After the death of Andy, anti-AIDS organizations praised Trudeau’s social awareness. (Hull)

The creators of Andy Lippincott’s AIDS quilt panel used the comics that are bordering the black rectangle as timeline for the progression of Andy’s disease and in many ways it represents the progression of AIDS affecting  communities. On May 24 1990, the very last comic with Andy includes his death “quietly in his bed, the window open to a sunny day and a coveted C.D. of the Beach Boy’s ‘Wouldn’t It be Nice’ playing”.

According to the Center of Disease Control, many communities, especially women and minority groups, where strongly affected by the AIDS crisis yet were underrepresented with education outreach efforts. For many years, HIV/AIDS research pertaining to women and minorities was not funded by the government because it was though to be only a homosexual, white male disease. (KFF)

The CDC states that while HIV diagnoses among women have declined drastically in recent years, over 7,000 women received an HIV diagnosis in 2015. Compared to other races and ethnicities, African American women are disproportionately affected by HIV.  60% of women living with diagnosed HIV at the end of 2014 were African American, followed by 17% Hispanic and 17% white. Shockingly out of women living with HIV, 11% do not know that they are infected. (CDC)

The CDC addresses the prevention challenges stating that minority communities, such as Hispanic/Latino and African Americans face a greater risk of HIV infection with each new sexual encounter. Also women who have been sexually abused “may be more likely than women who have not to engage in sexual risk behaviors like exchanging sex for drugs, having multiple sex partners, or having sex without a condom”. (CDC) For poorer communities, many people might not get the necessary sex education in school or in healthcare settings needed to understand and prevent the transmission of HIV. Health comics can help mend the disconnect and can provide essential HIV/AIDS information.

By working with state and local partners throughout the United States, the CDC identifies and implements cost effective interventions in populations that are most affected by HIV. Examples would be the funding of health departments and community-based organizations, such as awarding $330 million each year to certain health departments to prioritize HIV prevention strategies.(CDC) The CDC has also promoted the Act Against AIDS campaign, which includes some general health comic information about AIDS transmission and prevention. By utilizing easy to understand comics such as the one below, many people, no matter their age, reading level, or language, can comprehend the message the comic provides.

Health Comics


The presence of AIDS in a comic page sends a message: The epidemic has become a mainstream concern. Controversy is beneficial if it sheds light on a topic that remains in the dark to many individuals.

Understanding the educational messages within popular culture is vital for intervening in the AIDS crisis. (McAllister) Health comics tie together popular culture and health promotions to exemplify the importance of awareness for the AIDS epidemic. HIV/AIDS scholar, Simon Watney, states “Fighting AIDS is not just a medical struggle, it involves our understanding of the words and images which load the virus down with such a dismal cargo of appalling connotations”. (McAllister)

Artwork in the form of comics are universal and powerful. Any Lippincott’s story in the comic strip Doonesbury was powerful enough that the creators of his AIDS Memorial Quilt were touched by his presence within the comic strip and wanted to memorialize him even though they did not personally suffer from AIDS.

Comic books take on a new role as AIDS educators because of their potential to for dealing with social issues and utilizing these comics as a medium to deal with AIDS works in three ways: (1) the creation of a new comic book specifically designed to educate about AIDS; (2) integration of fictional people living with AIDS to establish story lines and characters; (3) the donation of profits made from the sale of AIDS related comic art to the AIDS cause. Comic books serve as effective health education tools but have the potential to do so much more than just convey factual information to a patient. They provide support for patients while they deal with the social and psychological aspect of their condition. These educational comics cover a wide range of illnesses from AIDS and sexual health to tuberculosis to diabetes type 1 and 2 to many more diseases. Not only do they raise awareness, prepare patients, and assist with critical decision making, but these comics also increase acceptance the condition and the is a better understanding of how it occurred and how it can be prevented. (McNicol)

Health related comics have a multitude of advantages over patient information leaflets because the offer a companionship when patients are affected by the negative feelings toward their condition. (McNicol) Leaflets or reading information from websites can be hard to comprehend and can leave patients feeling isolated.

Comics are a very non-threatening medium to display information and universalize the illness experience, yet one major down side to the effectiveness of these health comics is that it all depends on if the readers want to take the information provided through this medium seriously. (Carson) Most of these comics are made for low literacy patients, a younger demographic, and non-native speakers. (Carson) While these “dumbed-down” comics might seem childish, they are vital for bringing awareness to minority groups because they are universally understood.

AIDS Today


It has become increasingly necessary to recognize and embrace multi-modal texts and to encourage multi-literacy competencies needed to deal with them. (Stuart) AIDS comics are just beginning to progress. Host of National Public Radio, Farai Chideya, and creator and illustrator of “O+ Men“, Mr. Robert Walker, discuss what it really means to be a superhero during a 2008 interview. Chideya states that superheros can come in all forms, shapes, and sizes, but now some are battling with a life threatening virus, AIDS. Not only has Robert created a new super character but he also created an imaginative attempt to raise AIDS/HIV awareness and education through comic books. (NPR)

O+ Men is a story of a group of people with HIV who take an experimental AIDS antidote which unexpectedly gives them superpowers. (NPR) Walker states that this idea came about because he believed there should be a greater push of AIDS awareness in minority communities where there is a growing influx of people being affected at alarming rates. He also expressed how he is very direct with his descriptions and images in his comic and tries not to sugar coat anything because in order to prevent a disease, you need to understand how it works and how to deal with it.

Walker hopes that his comics could one day be distributed in Barnes and Noble or even get them into sexual education programs in schools. In order to make use of his comics as a reliable resource for readers, Walker has contributors such as Dr. Howard Grossens, M.D. HIV specialist that corresponds with him to to give important insight regarding AIDS that Walker can then portray into his comics. While efforts for awareness, such as The O+ Men, are being created, a 22 year analysis shows that overall the media coverage of AIDS/HIV has decreased in the U.S. but the focus has shifted to AIDS as an increasing global epidemic.

Media coverage increased during 1980’s, peaking in 1987 and then slowly declined through the 2000’s. This decline in media coverage in the U.S. increased attention to world populations. Over this time, HIV in the media focused transitioned to government funding/financing for HIV/AIDS. (KFF) This study also finds a decreasing number of stories in the media with a consumer education component.

National surveys of the public have indicated a lack of knowledge about HIV transmission among minorities in the United States due to the decline of AIDS in the media. (KFF) Based off of this information, the Kaiser Family Foundation raises the question: “to what extent does the media have a responsibility to educate the public, as opposed to focusing only on reporting the news?”

While medical progress has been made to treat people affected with AIDS/HIV, there is no known cure yet. As long as AIDS is still prevalent in the United States, educational efforts should be kept in place especially for those communities that do not have direct access to health information in sexual education or healthcare settings.

The purpose of this primary source analysis is to interpret modes of media, specifically comics and comic strips, that relate to AIDS/HIV and analyze the effect that these story lines and comic characters have on general public’s awareness and education of the epidemic during both a time period when AIDS/HIV was most prevalent and the present day. The audience addressed by the authors of the AIDS/HIV related media is a crucial aspect when analyzing the disadvantages that minorities and women had and still have regarding education about the disease.

This analysis utilizes data, such as graphs, scholar papers, and articles, etc, of minority communities and women in regards to the lack of media coverage about AIDS/HIV. Comic strips, such as Doonesbury, act as a public service announcement, for controversial topics, that reaches all aspects of the AIDS community and informs a universal public, such as men, women, teenagers, and minorities, of the key prevention tips and necessary precautions to help eliminate the spread of AIDS. Many characters in comics that suffer from AIDS allow the all audience to comprehend the devastating negative impact the disease and connect on a personal level with the process of acceptance and hope. The AIDS Memorial Quilt block that was made for Andy Lippincott, a gay comic character with AIDS that stared in Doonesbury, shows the impact that comics have on individuals.

I hope that through this primary source analysis I am able to clarify the inadequacy minorities and women had pertaining to media coverage of AIDS/HIV epidemic as it was evolving in the United States and express the importance of adopting new ways to discuss healthcare diseases and prevention and cures within every community.

 While AIDS/HIV news media has been crucial in educating the public about the disease, there has been minimal coverage among the African American community. I chose this article because it expresses the disadvantage many minorities faced in regards to education about AIDS prevention. Media and poculture regarding AIDS awarness centered soley around white homosexual men and did not represent straight men and women of color. In chapter 1 of “AIDS in Black & White”, Stevens discusses the difference in health status based on racial group and utilizes countless statistics and graphs from the CDC to demonstrate that African Americans were the second highest group affected by AIDS.

This study examines how news media relates to attitudes and behaviors of AIDS/HIV in a population and examines racial disparities. Data taken from the Center of Disease Control and Preventions’ National Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System during 1993 to 2007 examines the different effects that news coverage during that time period has on African Americans and Whites. This data states that in 2006 Blacks accounted for 49% of new AIDS cases in 2005, while only accounting for 12% of the total population. Stevens then goes on to discuss the several theories that could explain why there was a lack of coverage of AIDS in the African American community.

His main point suggests that if the coverage started to focus on Blacks, it would lessen the rick perception to all Americans and overall public financial support would diminish. Stevens concludes chapter 1 by expressing that his goal is to provide a “case study of how news coverage can deferentially influence and impact sub groups within a population, to help improve the health of all, or further exacerbate health disparities”.

McAllister states that understanding the educational messages within popular culture is vital for intervening in the AIDS crisis. McAllister includes a quote from an AIDS scholar, Simon Watney, which states “Fighting AIDS is not just a medical struggle, it involves our understanding of the words and images which load the virus down with such a dismal cargo of appalling connotations”.

He also points out the role that comic books have as AIDS educators because of their potential to for dealing with social issues and comics books as a medium deals with AIDS in three ways: (1) the creation of a new comic book specifically designed to educate about AIDS; (2) integration of fictional people living with AIDS to establish story lines and characters; (3) the donation of profits made from the sale of AIDS related comic art to the AIDS cause. By including multiple examples of comics in his journal that share a purpose of educating the general public about AIDS and HIV, he reiterates his idea that comics and artwork are universal and powerful. This journal related back to the AIDS Memorial Quilt, more specifically Any Lippincott’s quilt and the overall purpose of creating a memorial quilt for a fictional comic character. The people who created Lippincott’s quilt did not suffer from AIDS personally yet they were touched by his presence within the comic strip and wanted to memorialize him.

I chose this journal because public service announcements play an important role in educating the public in multiple different modes. A PSA could take from in a commercial on television, and ad in a magazine or even as a comic strip character in a newspaper. In chapter 1: HIV/AIDS Public Service Announcements, Carson states that public service announcements have been around since 1987 to educate the public about HIV and AIDS by explaining how this virus and disease are contracted and certain strategies to prevent the infection of HIV. In 2005, nongovernmental organizations also produced PSAs to help educate the public. After analyzing a series of studies, Carson concludes that while females are slightly represented as dominant figures in HIV and AIDS PSAs, they fall short of representation compared to men.

He incorporated a wide range of data from the Center of Disease Control, such as in 1999 the fifth leading cause of death fro U.S. women age 25-44 was AIDS, to support his argument that women, especially in minorities, suffer more from this epidemic because they are not as educated about the disease. PSAs for AIDS rarely target women and according to Raheim (1996) multiple prevention campaigns address women as “vessels for having children”. This leaves the question: what aspects of a PSA connect with women and minorities to inform and educate them?

4. Krier, Beth Ann. “Healing Laughter: [Home Edition].” Los Angeles Times (Pre-1997 Fulltext); Los Angeles, Calif. November 4, 1991, sec. View; PART-E; View Desk.

In this article, Krier solidifies her argument that there is a fine line where gentle and supportive positive humor turns to offensive and disrespectful mocking of the homosexual community.  Krier utilizes multiple examples of humor gone too far such as an excerpt from a journal by Alan Dundes, a UC Berkeley anthropology and folklore professor where he states: Q: Do you know what “gay” means? A: “Got AIDS yet?”. Krier jokes that some of the tasteless humor and satires might have been inspired by one of John Waters’ earlier films. Krier then lists multiple harsh and degrading examples of AIDS jokes in the media but also mentions the Doonesbury comic-strip where the cartoonist, Gary Trudeau, is applauded for his sensitivity regarding his character Andy Lippincott who died of AIDS after battling it for ten months.

Krier believes that some observers attribute the increase in non-homophobic AIDS humor to the fact that a growing number of people believe laughter is healing. Krier questions whether is it possible to laugh in the face of death and disease without offending people. While Trudeau received praise for his comic strips he also receives a lot of backlash. I believe this journal focuses too much on choosing a side and doesn’t focus on the significance that the joke progression have on informing the public about the dangers of AIDS.

5. Hull, Anne V. “Powerful Images // Trudeau Takes up a Sensitive Issue: [CITY Edition].” Petersburg Times; St. Petersburg, Fla. March 31, 1989, sec. FLORIDIAN.

Hull describes how Gary Trudeau, the cartoonist for the comic strip Doonesbury, satirizing a government official by creating a character, Lacey Davenport, who is oblivious to the horror of AIDS. This begins to start more controversy regarding Trudeau’s comic strop ultimately leading to the Boston Globe refusing to run the strip for the next week as the assistant managing editor Alexander Hawes describes the majority of next week’s strip to be offensive and “insensitive to the whole issue” of AIDS.

When Trudeau got did not return a phone call he received from St. Petersburg Times, he states, “If I have anything of interest to say, I say it in the strip”. Hull includes multiple news paper editor statements of the strip within her journal to express the variety of opinion around such a controversial subject. Urvashi Vaid, information director fro the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force in Washington, says “good comedy exposes things, it reveals contradictions and makes people recognize things. Bad comedy makes you laugh at something”. Hull also includes an observation by Dennis Stephens, executive director of AIDS Coalition Pinellas, where he made one objection to the comic strip: Every AIDS character or reference is about males, there are no intravenous drug users or females represented. This statement connects with other research articles that explain how women and minorities are left in the dark when it come to being informed about the AIDS epidemic.

Hull states that some people believe that AIDS has no place on a comic page but contradicts this idea by explaining that the presence of AIDS in a comic page sends a message: The epidemic has become a mainstream concern. Hull makes a valid argument within her journal; controversy is beneficial if it sheds light on a topic that remains in the dark to many individuals.

6. McNicol, Sarah. “Humanising Illness: Presenting Health Information in Educational Comics.” Medical Humanities 40, no. 1 (June 1, 2014): 49–55. https://doi.org/10.1136/medhum-2013-010469.

 Comic books serve as effective health education tools but have the potential to do so much more than just convey factual information to a patient. Comics provide support for patients while they deal with the social and psychological aspect of their condition. These educational comics can be found about a wide range of illnesses such as AIDS and sexual health to tuberculosis to diabetes type 1 and 2. Not only do they raise awareness, prepare patients, and assist with decision making, but they also increase acceptance and understanding of the condition.

McNicol describes these comics as a “very non-threatening medium” to display information and “universalize the illness experience” yet one major down side to the effectiveness of these health comics is that it all depends on if the readers want to take the information provided through this medium seriously. Most of these comics are made for low literacy patients, a younger demographic, and non-native speakers which is extremely important for bringing awareness to minority groups.

Ultimately McNicol concludes that health related comics have a multitude of advantages over patient information leaflets because the offer a “companionship” when patients are affected by the negative feelings toward their condition. These comics help patients and their families “come to terms” with their condition.

7. Stuart, Jean. “Media Matters: Producing a Culture of Compassion in the Age of AIDS: [2].” English Quarterly; Toronto 36, no. 2 (2004): 3–5.

Stuart expresses how it has become increasingly necessary to recognize and embrace multi-modal texts that the youth is exposed to and to encourage multi-literacy competencies needed to deal with them. As a response to AIDS/HIV in South Africa, a multitude of media texts are being created to assist in promoting education, awareness, and prevention.

Soul City is a project created in Africa to assist in social justice and education through TV and radio series, health information booklets, and comics for adults and children. This is still not enough to completely inform the public and Stuart includes a quote from The Media in Education Trust Annual Report stating, “the reality is that teachers need space and support to come to grips with HIV/AIDS themselves, before they can promote learning about it in their classrooms”. Thirteen pre-service teachers, participating in ‘From our Fame’ project, enrolled in a course on guidance which expressed the importance of breaking down social and cultural division in order to reach a universal audience when teaching. By using a medium such as photography an opportunity opened up to explore and express personal ideas about AIDS/HIV. The workshops the teachers participated in continues to express the importance of multi-modality and by utilizing story telling and educational comics, the teachers from ‘From our Frames’ project presented a message that aims on shaping a culture of compassion for those affected by AIDS/HIV.

 Host of National Public Radio, Farai Chideya, and creator and illustrator of “O+ Men”, Mr. Robert Walker, discuss what it really means to be a superhero. Chideya states that superheros can come in all forms, shapes, and sizes, but now some are battling with a life threatening virus, AIDS. Not only has Robert has created a new super character but he also created an imaginative attempt to raise AIDS/HIV awareness and education through comic books.

O+ Men is a story of a group of people with HIV who take an experimental AIDS antidote which unexpectedly gives them superpowers. Walker states that this idea came about because he believed there should be more of a push of AIDS awareness in a community where there is a growing influx of people being affected at alarming rates. He also expressed how he is very direct with his descriptions and images in his comic and tries not to sugar coat anything because in order to prevent a disease, you need to understand how to deal with it. Walker hopes that his comics could be distributed in Barnes and Noble or even get them into educational programs in schools as a sexual behavior study. In order to utilize his comic as a resource for readers, Walker has contributors such as Dr. Howard Grossens, M.D. HIV specialist that corresponds with him to to give knowledge that he can then portray into his comics.

 Reports from the Center of Disease Control state that while HIV diagnoses among women have declined drastically in recent years, over 7,000 women received an HIV diagnosis in 2015. Compared to other races and ethnicities, African American women are disproportionately affected by HIV.  60% of women living with diagnosed HIV at the end of 2014 were African American, followed by 17% Hispanic and 17% white. Shockingly out of women living with HIV, 11% do not know that they are infected.

The CDC addresses the prevention challenges stating that minority communities, such as Hispanic/Latino and African Americans face a greater risk of HIV infection with each new sexual encounter. Also women who have been sexually abused “may be more likely than women who have not to engage in sexual risk behaviors like exchanging sex for drugs, having multiple sex partners, or having sex without a condom”.

The CDC is working with state and local partners throughout the United States to identify and implement cost effective interventions in populations that are most affected by HIV. Examples would be the funding to health departments and community-based organizations such as awarding $330 million each year to certain health departments to prioritize HIV prevention strategies. The CDC has also promoted the Act Against AIDS campaign, and has also funded research on microbicides, a cream or gel that could be applied vaginally or anally before sexual contact to prevent HIV transmission.

A 22 year analysis shows that overall the media coverage of AIDS/HIV has decrease, but the focus has shifted from the AIDS in the United States to AIDS as an increasing global epidemic. The Kaiser Family Foundation analysis also reveals that specific populations are disproportionately affected by AIDS/HIV in the U.S. “In the United States, the HIV/AIDS epidemic has moved from being an absolute death sentence to more of a chronic disease and one with an increasing presence in minority communities,” said Mollyann Brodie, Ph.D., Vice President and Director of Public Opinion and Media Research at the Foundation.

Media coverage increase during 1980’s, peaking in 1987 and then slowly declined through the 2000’s. This decline in media coverage in the U.S. increased attention to world populations, specifically African and Asian nations. Overtime, HIV transmission in the media focused more on government funding/financing for HIV/AIDS. This study also finds a decreasing number of stories in the media with a consumer education component. National surveys of the public have indicated a lack of knowledge about HIV transmission among minorities in the United States. Based off of this information, the KFF raises the question: “to what extent do the media have a responsibility to educate the public, as opposed to focusing only on reporting the news?”

Every class is important and students should come to every class. If they miss class then they should make an appointment or drop in during office hours to review what they missed. Unexcused absences will cause students to lose 50 points and arriving late to class with cost students 25-50 points.

By completing and earning the minimum points for the major projects, complete all test prep, and attend every class, you will earn at least 2,200 points and a grade of a C.

What are the Unit 1 readings and which one is your group assigned to focus on for the Unit 1 Reading Response?

The unit one readings are Kenneth Haltman, “Introduction” to American Artifacts, paying careful attention to his description and discussion of Prown’s object analysis assignment and Stephanie Fitzgerald, “The Cultural Work of a Mohegan Painted Basket”. My group is assigned to group two which is the reading by Fitzgerald.

Group Reflection #1

Once week two rolled around, I realized that the confusion was building up. I got together with Xander to work on the class prep assignments and we helped each other if there we had any questions. We discussed Gradian and Hypothes.is and how each of the two works. We also helped each other understand the purpose of the reading responses.

I benefit a lot from group meet ups and definitely will work with Xander again in the future. I gained a lot of clarity through this collaboration and am happy with the outcome.

My name is Aline Castro and this is my personal blog. I am currently a freshman at Georgia State University and I am pursuing Nursing as my major.

I love being active and I participate in sports such as tennis, volleyball, and swimming. I also have two cute cats that I miss a lot and when I’m not playing a sport or hanging out with my cats you will always find me watching Netflix.

I am excited to see what GSU has to offer and I hope to survive my freshman year!
